How to prepare for IELTS and TOEFL exams

Practice makes a man perfect: The key to master anything is repetition.Diving into the content and repeating it so many times that it sinks in our mind is the key.Our mind has limited capacity to store any information.Any new learning go through various stages before it can transit from our short term memory to a long term. Your senses play the most important role in the formation of memories which directly and indirectly make you learn and adapt according to the environment.

Time Management: Exams demand a lot from students and keep them on their toes day and night. It is quite critical specially for those who are preparing for these exams for the first time.  Without adopting proper strategies, tools and studying habits, one will land up only in mess and chaos. Strong time planning helps  you in prioritizing your time well ahead of your exams which makes you learning more effective. Use of Google Calendar or clockify which are available for free can help you in the long run.

Stay away from distractions: Distraction is one of students' biggest enemies and some actions like turning off notifications, keeping your cell phone on silent mode or using headphones to cut down noise at your home can make them at least 60 times more productive. Also closing unnecessary tabs on your computer. If you need the Internet, keep only one tab open. You can fight online distractions by blocking, uninstalling or hiding time-wasting websites and apps. Also check if your desk is covered with stacks of unnecessary paper or books which are not required at that particular moment? Remove any unnecessary sticky notes.Try to keep your desk only with the essentials.

Stretch Breaks:During exams, students are over stressed between deadlines, assignments, papers etc and between this chaos a small break can revive not only their mood but also their energy and mind. There are so many things which we can do to help ourselves during this time like 10 mins nap, meditation, stretching our body, watering plants or just standing  in balcony to relax our eyes.Studies have shown that stretching affects the neurological system in a positive way by regulating our blood pressure and heart rate which often tend to rise when one is under pressure. Pressure tightens our mind and body muscles which lower down our performance at all levels.

Whereas relaxing our mind for a bit helps our brain function better along with focus. Therefore, next time you’re studying and you find yourself losing focus, get up and give yourself five-ten  minutes to move around, stretch and de-stress.

Diverse methodologies:Use of audio, visuals, different books, reading articles, online quizzes, discussion, debate are some of the ways which makes our learning more enjoyable. Its also equally important that we can make connection and try to connect it with our real world problems. As discussed in the beginning our mind grasp things easily when we can connect things.Thats why interdisciplinary learning is considered so effective. It's very essential that we learn through various ways so that the concept can sink and stick in our mind. Digitizing this process is a terrific way to speed it up and make the information more readily accessible.

Setting goals for each topic: Setting a goal obligates us to take action, regardless of the obstacles that may be in place. It makes us  accountable for our own actions, our efforts and even our time management skills regardless of the obstacles that may be in place. As such, it encourages students to develop critical thinking skills, new problem solving techniques, and a better understanding of how to overcome issues. It lessens feelings of being disheartened and encourages students to spend time on activities that contribute to his or her goals.

Breaking down your task in small chunks:  students get overwhelmed by reading, listening,Speaking and Writing tasks and in order to avoid more complexities it's important that you first figure out which parts of a task are most difficult for you. Analyze all the components of a task and activities so you can pinpoint trouble spots and determine which parts of the task might need to be broken down into more manageable pieces. After dividing it into manageable pieces, create a routine to finish it.This strategy makes larger tasks less daunting by helping you to see a beginning and end to a task. For speaking, you need to follow tree trunk method i.e. Connecting your ideas and relating to the things of the topic. It will not break your flow. Again it needs practice. For writing, like everybody knows you need to know grammar rules and be able to use good vocabulary and sentence structure. For reading, you need to read books of various topics to know the vocabulary and to understand better.

Be happy: Happiness and learning are very closely connected. As coaches, we also know that when students' affective filters or defenses are sky high, fight or flight responses will be modus operandi. A state full of defensive behaviors (withdrawn, angry) is totally unproductive.Happiness is a state of being willing to do difficult things, to take risks, to think deeply about issues and develop new solutions,Interest. This state is one of increased dopamine levels, important for interest and learning.

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language, it is conducted by the U.S.A but allows both British and American English.

Both the examinations are conducted to check the English Language proficiency of non-native English speakers and have 4 rounds of tests, consisting of Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

IELTS conducts 2 types of examinations.

i) General: General is for those who’ll be going to English-speaking countries for jobs and attending high school or lower grades.

ii) Academic: Academics are for individuals that plan to attend universities and do their higher education in these countries. In the case of working in professional careers like healthcare and engineering, one would need to give the Academic examination.
